CBSE Grade 9 Maths Chapter 1- Number Systems -Part 2( Rational Numbers)

What is meant by Equivalent Rational Number ?

The rational numbers do not have a unique representation in the form p/q, where p and q are integers and q ≠ 0. These are equivalent rational numbers (or fractions).

Example: Find Equivalent Rational Numbers of 1/2
Solution :
We get infinite Equivalent Rational Number of a given rational number.

What is Absolute value of a rational Number?

The distance of a rational number from zero on the number line is called its absolute value. Distance is positive, so absolute value is always positive. The absolute value of a positive number is the positive number, and the absolute value of a negative number is its opposite.

The absolute value of a rational number is the number itself regardless of its sign.
The absolute value of       +  =

The absolute value of       -   =
The absolute value of zero is zero as zero is neither positive nor negative.

The symbol to show the absolute value is two vertical lines.

If p/q is a rational number, then its absolute value is represented as .
The absolute value of a rational number is equal to the absolute value of its numerator divided by the absolute value of its denominator.

Absolute value of   =  =

How to find rational Numbers between two given Rational Numbers ?

Method 1

Rational Number between two Rational numbers 'a' and b = (a+b)/2
